Sanjeev Sanyal is an internationally acclaimed economist, urban theorist and the best-selling author of Land of the Seven Rivers: A Brief History of India’s Geography, The Indian Renaissance: India’s Rise After a Thousand Year’s of Decline and The Incredible History of India's Geography, all published by Penguin. He has also published over 150 articles, essays and columns on topics ranging from economics to history. In 2014, he was given the inaugural International Indian Achievers Award for contributions to Literature. He is or has been a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, London, Visiting Scholar at Oxford University, Adjunct Fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies, Singapore, and a Senior Fellow of the World Wide Fund for Nature (formerly World Wildlife Fund).

Sanjeev spent two decades working in international financial markets, and was the global strategist and managing director of one of the world's largest banks. He was named Young Global Leader 2010 by the World Economic Forum. In 2007, he was awarded the Eisenhower Fellowship for his work on urban issues and was also honored by the Singapore government at the World Cities Summit 2014. Sanjeev attended Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi and St. John’s College, Oxford where he was Rhodes Scholar.
